Big hello from the scenic NorthWet. Fan of the show and although I have the odd quibble here and there I think that you guys are doing a great job. Only wish I could be there having fun and drinking alongside, but geography is a powerful deterrent.
Bit about myself. I’m a Scotch drinker, but I also have begun drinking some of our local (relative term) Ryes. Took me a long time to go back to rye. Indiscretions of youth, but 30 or so years have dulled the pain. One of my favourites, Alberta Premium, seems to get some very good marks from The Whisky Bible, but I don’t think that it is available Stateside. If I ever get down your way I promise to bring a bottle. A bit sweet, like most Canadian Whiskeys, but a nice full flavour and really fun peppery finish. Good thing I like it, as we are killed on whiskey prices in BC. Probably close to double what you are paying. Have to tax us sinners you know.
Now a bit about tastes. Currently the fave is Highland Park 12. Best day to day whiskey I’ve found and an absolute treat out of a flask on a cold wet golf course. In fact, given a choice between poor weather and that flask, or good weather and none, I just might choose the mud. Of the Islays, Ardbeg 10 is my tipple, but Bowmore 12 will do in a pinch. I like the 15 and 18 year olds, but as I mentioned we are slammed on cost. The Ardbeg is 95 bucks, and Bowmore18 will set you back 120. I’ve got a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask in the cupboard, and it is just fine with some water, but that bottle will still be there when the Highland Park is long gone. Quite enjoyed the Caol Ila 12 I had last summer, but that is quite hard to find here. Going to have to join the local branch of the SMWS one of these days.
At any rate, Hi. I’m in Vancouver, it is cold and raining, but I’m drinking Scotch so it ain’t all bad.
